Due to the higher voltage L14-30 outlets have, one of the hot wires is left empty in this adapter to prevent equipment from burning out.

GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) provides personal protection from ground faults and open neutral conditions for the job site, plant floor or workshop. GFCI is UL listed and meets OSHA specifications. When using a GFCI adapter for an outlet that is not protected, the adapter should always be placed nearest the outlet (GFCI then the extension cord).
